Lombard Street, Petworth in the 1890s. At this time the cobbles
ran right across the street. Some say that the name comes
from Lombard glass-workers who found refuge here but the old
name for the street was "the Causey". The pump is
part of the old conduit public water supply - the top would
be lifted and water would issue from the spout. (Photographs

by the West Sussex Record Office at Chichester. Published

and Newdick).
